What's the difference between restarting, resetting and reinstalling my computer?

This question was answered on August 20, 2026.

These three terms sound similar, but they represent very different levels of troubleshooting. Knowing the difference can save you a lot of time and, more importantly, keep you from accidentally erasing something you wanted to keep.

Think of them as three progressively more aggressive steps: restart first, reset when problems persist and reinstall when you need the cleanest possible start.

Start With a Restart
Restarting should always be your first troubleshooting step whenever your computer starts acting strangely.

A restart completely shuts down Windows and reloads the operating system, drivers and background processes. This can clear temporary glitches, memory problems, hung programs and problems caused by an update that hasn't completely finished installing or needs a restart to complete.

One important distinction is that clicking Restart can be more effective than shutting the computer down and turning it back on.

Windows has a feature called Fast Startup that can preserve portions of the previous Windows session during a normal shutdown. Restart bypasses that process and reloads Windows more completely.

Restarting doesn't delete your programs, settings or personal files, so there's little downside to trying it first. It's also a good idea to routinely restart your computer to clear memory and background processes that can accumulate during normal use.

When to Consider a Reset
If restarting doesn't solve recurring problems such as crashes, unexplained errors, sluggish performance or corrupted Windows components, a reset is the next level, but it shouldn't be done without some planning.

In Windows 11, you'll find the option under Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. You'll have two important choices: Keep my files or Remove everything

"Keep my files" reinstalls Windows while preserving your personal files, but it removes installed programs and resets many settings. You'll need to reinstall programs such as Microsoft Office, printer drivers and other applications afterward, so it's pretty close to starting over.

"Remove everything" is much more aggressive because it removes personal files along with programs and settings. It's generally used when you're preparing to give away or sell a computer or when you want to completely start over.

Either way, make sure you have a verified backup of anything important before starting a reset. Never assume "Keep my files" is a substitute for a backup and make sure you have what you need to reinstall all your important programs and apps.

The Clean Installation
A clean installation is the most thorough option and is generally reserved for serious problems that a reset can't fix.

It typically involves creating Windows installation media on a USB drive, booting the computer from it, and installing a completely fresh copy of Windows.

This can eliminate deeply corrupted system files, stubborn malware, problematic manufacturer software and years of accumulated digital clutter.

It also requires more preparation. You'll need backups of your personal files, access to your passwords, installation files for important programs and possibly drivers for specialized hardware, especially when it comes to laptops.

Both a reset and clean installation are much more complicated and require a good understanding of what's involved to get your computer back to a functional state. If this isn't something you've done before, consult a tech-savvy friend or tech expert to help you avoid the pitfalls that can come from poor planning.
